Vaginal Discharge: What Your Body Is Communicating — and When to Pay Attention
Vaginal discharge is one of the most consistent sources of information about your hormonal health — and one of the least discussed. Most women are given almost no education about what discharge is, how it changes across the cycle, and what variations signal.
Discharge is not a problem to be managed. It is a biological process, a fertility signal, and a window into the health of your vaginal microbiome, your hormonal balance, and your overall physiological state.
What Discharge Is
Vaginal discharge is a mixture of cervical mucus, vaginal secretions, and shed vaginal cells. It serves several purposes: keeping the vaginal environment clean and lubricated, maintaining the acidic pH that protects against infection, supporting fertility by creating the conditions for sperm survival around ovulation, and reflecting the health of the vaginal microbiome.
The cervix is the primary producer of mucus. The quantity, consistency, and appearance of that mucus is directly regulated by oestrogen and progesterone — making discharge a real-time readout of where you are in your cycle.
Discharge Across Your Cycle
Immediately after your period (days 1–5)
Little to no discharge. The post-menstrual phase is typically dry as oestrogen is at its lowest.
Early follicular phase (days 6–9)
Discharge begins as oestrogen rises. Initially scant and slightly sticky or white. The vaginal environment is becoming more active.
Approaching ovulation (days 10–13)
Discharge increases and becomes more watery. This is the body preparing for fertility — creating a more alkaline, sperm-friendly environment.
At ovulation (around day 14)

Luteal phase (days 15–28)

Yellow or green discharge

Grey or fishy-smelling discharge

When Lactobacillus is depleted — by antibiotics, hormonal changes, sexual activity, diet, or stress — pH rises and the character of discharge changes.
